What is flatfoot?

Flatfoot is a foot condition characterized by a loss of the medial arch of the foot (tending to flatten). (tending to flatten), losing the normal structure.

It may present with or without pain. Patients often present with unsteady gait, repeated sprains, pain in the metatarsal heads and on the edge of the foot.

The causes are usually neuromuscular conditions or spinal pathologies, it may be due to muscular weaknesses, ligaments or bony structures of the arch that produce collapse. It can appear due to excessive tension in the triceps suralis, obesity, dysfunction of the tibialis posterior or excessive laxity in the ligaments, plantar fascia or structures that support the foot.

 

How is this injury treated?
